Absence

Clarity of Absence

It’s just a drop in the ocean

He says

Time will fly by

Just fourteen days

By day three

The ice cream had run out

Day seven supported a floor

Lined with tear stained tissues

By the tenth day

The batteries had died

Only to be replaced by curse words

On the fourteenth night

He found a pristine flat

Scrubbed clean and bleached

One solitary post-it on the bed

‘You were right, that’s all it took’

Outbound again

It begins

The slow lurch of movement

Pulling away from you

For a time I can still feel

The ghost of your lips

linger

On mine

The caress of fingertips

Echoes through my hair

Roots damp with sweat

The remainder of memories

Left with me

Within me

The scent of you

Breathing deeply it is all I can do

To revive the memory of you

Hands clenched around me

Skin soaked under your heat

Forcing a smile to my lips

As I sit absorbing the dull vibrations

Closing my eyes to blurred landscape

Shutting out the rumble of the carriage

Cursing that which takes me away from you

Fading presence

You slip

Away from me

Every night

Every morning

Every hour

of your absence

I try to hold you

Etching your face

into my eyelids

Imploring my ear drums

Not to forget

Your sweet dulcet tones

Beseeching my body

Not to dull the tingle

The shiver of you

Yet with each passing day

Each passing hour

You slowly fade

and die in me
